Durva's Home: Better Interiors, October 2008

Gallerist Durva Gandhi's minimal interpretation of festive decoration involves traditional elements- lights, incense and flowers - with a contemplative Buddha and bright artwork thrown in for good measure.
-Maria Louis

The deity occupies centre stage in their minimalistic home... and Durva and her husband Kumar, naturally gravitate to the "altar" for calm reflection or meditation.

To decorate the space for Diwali, they placed square glass containers with floating candles at two cardinal points below the platform, while a scented candle cleanses the air and a large white lotus wax candle floats in the urli on the floor.

Marigolds are alternated with candles on the joints of the tiles to form a festive floor bed, and the pebble outlay opposite is lined with a row of marigolds and illuminated by up lighters. Above it, they hung a bright gold work by emerging artist Atmanand Chauhan, whose solo show Durva ill present at the Jehangir Nicholsan Gallery, NCPA, Mumbai, from November 28 to December 7, this year. Done in wash-tempera style in layers, the splash of colour in an otherwise white and serene atmosphere adds a joyful touch in a subtle and sophisticated manner.
